尼泊尔经济对农业及侨胞的汇款有很大程度上的依赖^[6]。直到20世纪中叶，尼泊尔仍然处于孤立及未被工业化的社会状态，学校、医院、道路、电信、电力、工业或民用服务一应俱无。1950年代开始有显著的变化，一连串的五年计划（英语：Five-Year Plans of Nepal）相继展开，至2022年已经落实了第九个五年计划。

国内65%的劳动人口从事农业，占GDP的31.7%。主要农作物包括：水果和蔬菜（苹果、梨子、番茄、各种沙拉蔬菜、桃子、油桃、马铃薯）以及大米和小麦。GDP的9.1%来自海外侨胞（包括前往中东各国打工）的汇款。旅游业和水力发电是比较新兴的经济活动，为该国带来非常可观的收入。
