成年歲數是屬於在法律內，一種為了與成年人與未成年人之間分清楚界限的其中一種定義。這是從按時間順序排列來說，當未成年人到達了不再具有法律條文被認定為是兒童，並承擔了他們的人、行動和決策實施控制，從而終止父母或監護人監護未成年人而受法律控制的責任。有很多國家把法定年齡都定義在18歲的年齡階段。其中，「法定年齡」的「法定」二字指的是滿足或超過該周歲的年齡，與未成年人是一個相對的概念。但在某些國家內的部分法律，可能不會使用「法定年齡」此術語來制定這樣賜予成年人與未成年人年齡地段的法律地位。其中，法定年齡是固定的觀念和準則，然而這一個觀念不一定代表一個人的真實心理會導致成熟。雖然一個人到達合法年齡時，能享受任何權利或義務，但這些權利或義務也受到一定程度的法律限制（不是無政府狀態）。例如參選什麼高等職位的權利，都是有設定年齡的限制。

擴展理解

法定年齡很容易被「合法年齡」這個東西混淆。[1]雖然兩者都是屬於成年人與非成年人的門檻區分，但在廣泛含義來說，「法定年齡」此詞語更有絕對程度上的含義。在法律術語上說，「合法」就是代表「證明」的含義，而且它可以牽涉一個法定強制性執行的權利和特權。但合法年齡指的是當其中一個人達到指定年齡時，在有合法證明的情況下，可以從政府中獲取合法的權利去做一些東西。而法定年齡指的是一種合法認識一個人從未成年人成長為成年人的階段。[2]

法定年齡只是單獨屬於控制一個人獲取自由、行動和決定的權利。包括家長或監護人，在過孩子的人（一般事務代替父母的人）也有權利終止相關的控制法律責任。

幾乎所有的司法權都是自動地授予在已結婚的人脫離未成年人的權利，但從大多數來說，在現役武裝部隊的一部分未成年人都是有脫離未成年人的權利。[3]
