史蒂芬·巴特沃斯 OBE（英语：Stephen Butterworth，1885年8月11日—1958年10月28日）是一名英国物理学家，发明了以他名字命名的滤波器[1]，为一种可以分离不同频率的电讯号的电路。
生平
巴特沃斯于1885年8月11日出生在英格兰兰开夏郡罗奇代尔（位于曼彻斯特北部约10英里处的一个小镇）。他是邮差亚历山大·巴特沃斯（Alexander Butterworth）和伊丽莎白·怀恩（Elizabeth Wynn）的儿子[2]，在家里四个孩子中排行第二[3]。1904年，他进入曼彻斯特维多利亚大学，并于1907年获得物理学学士学位和教师证书。1908年，他获得物理学硕士学位[4]。在接下来的11年里，他在曼彻斯特理工大学担任物理学讲师。随后他在英国国家物理实验室工作了几年，在那里他做了确定电感标准的理论和实验工作。1921年，他加入海军部科学研究和实验部门的海军部研究实验室。不幸的是，他的工作的保密性质禁止他在那里的许多研究发表。然而众所周知，他在广泛的领域内工作。例如他确定携带交流电的海底电缆周围的电磁场[5]，他并研究水下爆炸和鱼雷的稳定性。1939年，他在海军部研究实验室担任首席科学官[6]。第二次世界大战期间，他研究了磁性水雷和船舶的退磁（作为保护它们免受磁性水雷攻击的一种手段）。
