三大始祖 (纯种马)

纯种马起源

在十七世纪末及十八世纪初，英国开始引进多匹中东种马与英国当地的牝马配种，配种后所生的马匹能力比当地马匹更优秀，而所生的马匹就是第一代纯种马。根据育马大全（英语：General Stud Book）（General Stud Book）记载，引进的102匹中东种马包括阿拉伯马，巴布马及土耳其马等。

三大始祖（Three Foundation Sires）

目前世界上所有的纯种马的父线血统都可以追溯到17世纪至18世纪时，英国从中东引进的三头阿拉伯及巴布种马，分别是拜耶尔土耳其（Byerley Turk 1680年）、达利阿拉伯（Darley Arabian 1700年）与高多芬阿拉伯（Godolphin Arabian 1729年）。

三大基础种马（Three Foundation Stallions）

而在十八世纪，出了三匹种马，分别是马湛（Matchem 1748年，高多芬阿拉伯的孙）、希律（Herod 1758年，拜耶尔土耳其的玄孙）与日蚀（Eclipse 1764年，达利阿拉伯的玄孙）。目前世界上绝大部分纯种马的父线血统就是出自牠们，牠们的出现确立了三大始祖的路线。

而赛马车的祖先Messenger父线血统可以追溯到达利阿拉伯的儿子飞彻斯特（Flying Childers），少数非来自三大基础种马的父线血统。

近年来的研究发现全世界约有95%的纯种马直系父线都是源自达利阿拉伯。

误解

很多人会误解现代马的血统只是来自三大始祖，事实包括除了三大始祖外，英国亦引入了多匹东方种马包括圣维特巴布（St. Victor Barb），却云枣巴布（Curwen's Bay Barb），艾阁阿拉伯（Alcock Arabian），费法斯摩洛哥巴布（Fairfax Morocco Barb），布朗洛土耳其（Brownlow Turk），达西黄土耳其（Darcy's Yellow Turk），李斯特土耳其（Lister Turk），及列斯阿拉伯（Leedes Arabian），虽然牠们直系父线已因多种原因而被淘汰，但仍可在母线中找到其血统。而近年来的研究发现，如用父母线所有祖先血统分析，原来现代纯种马有24%来自高多芬阿拉伯，比11%的达利阿拉伯还要多。
