Windows XP移除的功能
身為Windows 2000技術的繼任者，Windows XP在引入諸多新功能的同時，亦移除諸多舊功能。下面將介紹XP系統移除的功能。

內核
- 移除不安全裝置對話方塊被刪除[1]。
- Windows檔案總管中不可以檢視小圖示[2]。
- 「桌面圖示排列」命令不可用，由「對齊到網格」命令取代[3]，該切換簡化桌面圖示位置調整的操作，無需單擊確定圖示的位置[4]:47。
- 工作列隱藏了「最小化所有視窗」命令[4]:76，以「顯示桌面」取代，但該命令仍被保留，實際功能僅是暫時隱藏視窗而不是減少視窗數量，該命令仍能透過鍵盤熱鍵組合
Win+M啟用。 - 鑑於圖示的色彩豐富，「顯示」內容中「使用所有可用的顏色顯示圖示」選項刪除[5]。
- 「顯示」內容「設置」索引標籤中「影片圖形陣列顯示解像度」和「8位元顏色深度選項」被移除，可以利用進階選項呼叫，但這種功能已不支援[6]。
- 資料夾「Web視圖」預設禁用，可透過編輯登錄檔恢復。此外，「客製化資料夾精靈」被刪除[7]。由於Web視圖的刪除，打開驅動器時顯示磁碟空間的圓形圖不能顯示[8]。
- 在地址列瀏覽檔案路徑地址[9]、抽取式驅動器[10]、在檔案總管打開網絡共用導航窗格（或資料夾）時，底部狀態列不再顯示檔案所在磁碟的剩餘空間，僅顯示驅動器路徑的剩餘空間。這與前文提到的被刪除的拼圖相結合，意味着不可在剩下的三個驅動器中即時檢視剩餘空間。
- 命令提示字元中，快速編輯模式和插入模式預設禁用，僅能重新啟動每個視窗的標題[11]。
- 目錄圖示從網路上的芳鄰移除[12]。
- Windows檔案總管的預設排序順序改變，可通過編輯登錄檔恢復[13]。
- 聯絡電話撥號員[14]和網絡會議[15]從開始功能表移除。
個人化設置
- Windows 2000中的桌面主題工具，即Microsoft Plus!98和後來被2000引入的用以選擇套用主題和預覽主題的主題工具中「每月主題更換」選項被移除，在XP中成為「顯示」內容中「主題」索引標籤。
- 「顯示」內容中「外觀」索引標籤不可儲存或刪除方案。
- 「顯示」內容中選擇「背景」（2000）/桌面（XP）圖案模式索引標籤被刪除。
- 三維迷宮（可能由於Windows徽標改變）和三維管道屏保被刪除，三維管道中茶壺復活節彩蛋不適用於XP。
合併應用程式
- Windows 98附加程式及2000程式——豪華版「CD播放程式」被刪除[16]。取而代之的Windows Media Player中不含原有的上載音軌資訊[17]、點播下載音軌資訊、音軌預覽等功能。
- DVD播放器簡化成Windows Media Player的樁。
- Imaging for Windows被「圖片和傳真檢視器」和「掃描器和相機精靈」取代[18]，但這兩個程式不包括映像的進階功能[19]。
協定
- NetDDE和NetBIOS不再在預設情況下安裝，但可透過Windows XP CD-ROM安裝[20][21]。
- 數據鏈路控制網絡協定不再包括在系統內，但微軟提供協定下載[22]。
- 可路由協定組不再包括[23]。
子系統
- POSIX子系統由Windows Services for UNIX3.0或更高版本取代[24] 。
- OS/2子系統被刪除[24]。

硬件支援
- 不再支援數據機、網卡及低於28.8Kbps的數據機原生支援等非隨插即用網絡裝置[25]
- 大量SCSI主機配接器不再支援[26]。
- XP降低對NECPC-98[24]和矽谷圖形公司320型和540型圖形工作站的支援[20]。
後續版本
Service Pack 2
- 原始通訊端支援大多被移除[27]。
- TCP半開連結數量受限[28]。
- 程式管理員變成根。
- Internet Explorer 6捆綁版本中的媒體欄[29]被電台工具列[30]取代，不再出現在打包版本的IE6中。
- Outlook Express捆綁版本移除了後台資訊壓縮特性[31] ，禁用該特性，每壓縮訊息一百次，該程式將不被執行。
Service Pack 3
- 工作列中的「地址」工具列因法律原因被微軟移除[32]，取代其的功能「Windows桌面搜尋」遭鼓吹。
- Internet Explorer桌面圖示的特殊顯示設置被移除[33]。
- Service Pack 3不累積以前安裝的服務包的內容，至少需要先安裝SP1，SP2則包含在媒體中心Windows XP版和2003版中[34][35]。微軟證實可以進行尾流累積[36]。
Media Center Edition 2005
- 儘管用於Windows XP專業版的媒體中心2005版正在開發中，但其域名支援不可用。微軟表示這是需要使用者快速切換到Windows媒體中心擴充器[37]，但在安裝或升級前就已使用該功能的情況下例外，但這之後的域名支援被禁用。
- Windows Media Player6.4不包含在內。
