生平

他出生於芝加哥，母親難產而死，不久後父親在一次事故中喪生。他被富有的老奧斯卡·伯蒂徹（Oscar Boetticher Sr.；1867–1953）和喬治婭· 納斯（Georgia Naas Boetticher；1888–1955）收養。他在印第安納州埃文斯維爾長大，就讀卡爾弗軍事學院，在那裡與小哈爾·羅奇成為了朋友^[3]。

他曾是俄亥俄州立大學的明星運動員，但因傷病退役。1939年，他前往墨西哥學習鬥牛^[2]^[3]。

他在1939年開始涉足電影業，曾擔任《碧血黃沙》的技術顧問^[3]。此後，他收到了哥倫比亞影業的邀請，擔任《房東小姐》（1943）的助理導演，受到公司賞識，並逐漸晉升。他第一個署名導演的作品是1944年的《神秘的夜》。^[3]
