2018年4月18日，因应尼加拉瓜总统丹尼尔·奥尔特加提出提高所得税与薪资税（英语：Payroll tax）、并调降退休金5%[7]的社会福利（英语：Nicaraguan Social Security Institute）改革方案，该国许多城市涌现抗议人潮，五天之内造成约30人身亡，奥尔特加宣布取消改革计划，但抗争仍未平息，反而激化成要求奥尔特加辞去总统职务，是其任内最大规模的示威抗议[8]，也是1990年尼加拉瓜革命结束以来，该国伤亡最惨重的国内冲突[9]。9月29日，奥尔特加宣布这起示威抗议为非法[10]。

虽奥尔特加于2016年以大幅领先的票数胜选，但欧洲议会仍呼吁该国提早举行大选[11]。上千人参与示威也是尼加拉瓜近年来较大的一次。[12]

在尼加拉瓜政府的镇压之下，已有数百名抗议者身亡[13]。在4月第一个星期的抗议中便至少有42名抗议者身亡[14]，尼加拉瓜政府向示威群众开火[15][16]，甚至还有报导指其武力支援桑迪诺青年团（英语：Sandinista Youth）等亲政府的武装，以协助镇压抗议民众[15]。5月2日，迈阿密先驱报报导指出已至少有63人身亡，其中多数为抗议学生[15]。至5月底，已有超过105人被杀[17]。抗议发生后的100天后（7月27日），死亡人数已增加到448人.[5]。而该国城镇穆卢库库的市长因被指控与3名警察的死亡有关，于7月被警方逮补[18]。

许多被拘留的抗议人士获释后表示他们曾遭到虐待[19][16]，还有人表示在秘密牢房中听到古巴与委内瑞拉的口音，怀疑有外国人士协助尼加拉瓜政府镇压抗议[20]。联合国人权理事会对尼加拉瓜政府可能有非法处决抗议民众的行为表示谴责[21]。美洲人权委员会（英语：Inter-American Commission on Human Rights）收到许多人指控政府死者与被拘留者家属提出抗议，并威胁该国的一些人权护卫者[22]。
