The Warburg hypothesis, sometimes known as the Warburg theory of cancer, postulates that the driver of tumorigenesis is an insufficient cellular respiration caused by damaged mitochondria. The term Warburg effect describes the observation that cancer cells, and many cells grown in-vitro, exhibit glucose fermentation even when enough oxygen is present to properly respire. In other words, instead of fully respiring in the presence of adequate oxygen, cancer cells ferment. The Warburg hypothesis was that the Warburg effect was the root cause of cancer.

    • Wikidata will get dedicated database resources, and go read-only for 30 minutes on 9th January 2018 (phabricator:T181645)
    • There were no RDF dumps last week due to problems generating them, investigation is still going on (phabricator:T181385)
    • Improved the threshold for ORES on Wikidata (phabricator:T180450)
    • Working on fixing a regression after a change in MediaWiki core that makes edit links show up on diff pages (phabricator:T181807)
    • More work on persistent editing of statements on Forms of a Lexeme (specifically phabricator:T180467)
    • Improved size of the diff that we sent to Wikipedia and co for changes happening on Wikidata. This is one more needed step towards only showing meaningful edits in the watchlists and recent changes there. (phabricator:T113468)

  • MediaWiki的新版本将于12月5日部署于测试维基及MediaWiki.org。它将于12月6日部署至非维基百科wiki及部分维基百科，并于12月7日部署至所有wiki，参见日历。
  • 古老版本的Opera网页浏览器不再被支持。这意味着技术开发不再会在这些版本的Opera上进行测试。如果你遇到问题，请使用Opera 15以上版本或其他浏览器。 [4]

我倒是比較好奇，從收到投訴、調查、廣泛評價到多名基金會工作人員明確批准，基金會決定動用最後手段有三種情況：

  • 社群缺乏自我约束或采取行动来解决或缓解状况的能力；
  • 所有可能由社群为主导应对状况的努力都已进行过并且似乎失败；
  • 基金会了解到我们不能公开的情况；此类情况可能包括但不限于涉及个人敏感信息，与正在进行的警方调查或法庭程序相关，或可能存在安全风险。

我刚刚想到，像维基百科:聚会/中国大陆社群聚会/2017年深圳暑假聚会所提到的“声称威胁爱孟的家人安全”之类的言论，如果情况属实，不是也符合这三项要求，可以上报WMF寻求Global Ban吗？为什么不去做呢？就算英语不好，难道几百个人的QQ群里面就没有一个愿意帮手的人？难道WMF就不会提供进一步的援助？说不定过几个月又再反转一次，Lnnocentius一语成谶也是有可能的。--Xgsh（留言） 2017年12月5日 (二) 07:02 (UTC)

爱孟全域封禁一案之反思

非常遗憾得知爱孟被全域封禁。不少社群用户都望其能（在遵守WP:CIVIL的前提下）回归社群继续贡献，惟其故态复萌，违反使用條款而遭基金会全域封禁。

查基金会全域编辑禁制方针，其对于全域封禁的实施有着严格规范，并经多道复核程序才最终定谳，故此决定应得到当事人的遵守以及社群的尊重。若有任何疑问、意见，请向 ca - at - wikimedia.org 提出，否则请勿横生事端，使本已平息的社群纷争死灰复燃。

全案肇始于当事人与社群中部分管理员之间的矛盾，后分歧逐渐扩大以致本地社群难以给出让各方满意的解决方案，故此案情上报至元维基。俗话说“家丑不可外扬”，一场本应由本地社群自行处理的风波何以在某些管理员对当事人持续人身攻击（甚至蔓延到站外）和无理诬陷诽谤纵容下逐渐升级失控，以致元维基采取这一“最后手段”，值得社群反思。--4Li 2017年12月3日 (日) 02:31 (UTC)

以前（2014年）觉得他被封有点冤，但是现在我觉得他在解封之后没能保持克制，并对他人人身攻击，这种情况下被封禁并不奇怪，如果他能够减少人身攻击遵守WP:CIVIL，我相信他能为维基百科贡献更多。--№.N（留言） 2017年12月3日 (日) 03:14 (UTC)

是的，关于爱孟的本地账户，现在已无任何封禁，本地社群没什么可做的了。至于两派之间如何化干戈为玉帛，就要看两派“领导人”的胆识与智慧了（至少像之前那样听得风就是雨然后到互煮客栈闹个大新闻是不行的）。我相信年轻的一代在眼光与能力上应该会更上一层楼。--4Li 2017年12月5日 (二) 02:59 (UTC)
即使不考虑个人恩怨的因素，两个用户组在人员数量、贡献量方面的差距还是必然的。目前被基金会认可的WUGC很大可能要被WMC取代或吸收。目前WUGC主要专注海外事务，也渐渐不活跃，近几年的年度报告一直说“stop accepting new members publicly and public offline activities after Chinese Wikipedia has blocked in May, 2015”——因为大陆地区封锁而停止招人以及公开活动，可能是其不活跃的主因。@AddisWang、Mys 721tx：这个决定是否有安全或法律方面的考量？WMC招了一百来个人、开了几次聚会也没有什么事情，难道作为基金会目前认可的用户组有什么敏感之处吗？还请赐教。WMC则通过QQ群等渠道掌握了大部分大陆地区新手的入口，得以快速发展。如果WMC现在的目的是尽快得到基金会的认可，暂时没有必要对抗基金会的决定，直接宣扬建设维基为主就可以了。其他过去的历史遗留问题，也不是不可以商量的。我支持大陆地区维基人发展社群寻求基金会认可的努力，但坚决反对人身攻击、恶意推定、歪曲事实的无益行为。相关方针--Xgsh（留言） 2017年12月5日 (二) 07:02 (UTC)

回Antigng：我说的不是本地引入禁制制度；而是全域禁制在本地其他方针中没有体现。比如我们很多年前就拿掉了CSD G5: Banned User。又比如说目前本地对于User:守望者爱孟及User talk:守望者爱孟两个页面施加的保护是找不到方针依据的（该账户仅被施全域编辑禁制，而无方针要求被全域编辑禁制的用户的用户页及用户讨论页应挂模板加全保护，虽然我们目前可以参照永久封禁来执行。） --达师 - 345 - 574 2017年12月5日 (二) 06:14 (UTC)

The sardine run of southern Africa occurs from May through July when billions of sardines – or more specifically the Southern African pilchard Sardinops sagax – spawn in the cool waters of the Agulhas Bank and move northward along the east coast of South Africa. Their sheer numbers create a feeding frenzy along the coastline. The run, containing millions of individual sardines, occurs when a current of cold water heads north from the Agulhas Bank up to Mozambique where it then leaves the coastline and goes further east into the Indian Ocean. In terms of biomass, researchers estimate the sardine run could rival East Africa's great wildebeest migration. However, little is known of the phenomenon. It is believed that the water temperature has to drop below 21 °C in order for the migration to take place. In 2003, the sardines failed to 'run' for the third time in 23 years. While 2005 saw a good run, 2006 marked another non-run. The shoals are often more than 7 km long, 1.5 km wide and 30 metres deep and are clearly visible from spotter planes or from the surface. Sardines group together when they are threatened. This instinctual behaviour is a defence mechanism, as lone individuals are more likely to be eaten than large groups.

  • Sandra presented the plans for Structured Commons during WikidataCon in Berlin, on October 29. The presentation focused on collaboration between the Wikidata and Commons communities. You can see the full video here.
Partners and allies
  • We are still welcoming (more) staff from GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) to become part of our long-term focus group (phabricator task T174134). You will be kept in the loop of the project, and receive regular small surveys and requests for feedback. Get in touch with Sandra if you're interested - your input in helping to shape this project is highly valued!
Research
  • Research findings from interviews and surveys of GLAM project participants are being published to the research page. Check back over the next few weeks as additional details (notes, quotes, charts, blog posts, and slide decks) will be added to or linked from that page.
Development
  • The Structured Commons team has written and submitted a report about the first nine months of work on the project to its funders, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The 53-page report, published on November 1, is available on Wikimedia Commons.
  • The team has started working on designs for changes to the upload wizard (T182019).
  • We started preliminary work to prototype changes for file info pages.
  • Work on the MediaInfo extension is ongoing (T176012).
  • The team is continuing its work on baseline metrics on Commons, in order to be able to measure the effectiveness of structured data on Commons. (T174519)
  • Upcoming: in the first half of 2018, the first prototypes and design sketches for file pages, the UploadWizard, and for search will be published for discussion and feedback!

Rooh Afza is a non-alcoholic concentrated squash. It was formulated in 1906 in Ghaziabad, British India and is still manufactured and popular in Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. The recipe of Rooh Afza combines several ingredients popularly believed to be cooling agents, such as rose, which is used as a remedy for loo (the hot summer winds of Northern India, Pakistan and Bangladesh). The drink is commonly associated with the month of Ramadan, in which it is usually consumed during iftar.

  • Development
    • Additional languages for monolingual values got approved by the language committee: ami (Amis), bnn (Bunun), fos (Siraya), ppu (Papora / Hoanya), pwn (Paiwan), pyu (Puyuma), ssf (Thao), trv (Seediq / Taroko), uun (Pazeh) (see gerrit:374052, phab:T144272)
    • More work on caching constraint results so we can enable the constraints checks for all logged-in users by default
    • Fixed a bug when edit links showed up in diff views (phabricator:T181807)
    • Final step towards being able to store statements on Forms of a Lexeme
    • Disabled RDF support for Lexemes as the mapping isn't defined yet (phabricator:T182660)
    • Adding some more smart tracking for Lua usage so we better know which properties from an item are used on a Wikipedia article even when the whole item is loaded (phabricator:T179923)

  • The filters are now deployed as a default feature on all wikis on RecentChanges and RecentChangesLinked pages.
  • The filters are still available as a Beta feature on all wikis on Watchlists. Please try them!
  • LiveUpdates have been deployed as a default feature for all wikis.
  • On wikis using Extension:Translate, translated messages can now be filtered. System messages can be filtered as well, on all wikis. [16]
  • "显示最新更改" link is now more prominent, to invite users to use that native feature to update the list of results. [17]
  • Pagination and time period selectors are now combined and located on the right on left-to-right wikis. [18]
  • When a user wanted to click outside of the filter menu to close it, it was possible to click on "revert" link by accident. It is not possible anymore. [19]
  • It is now possible to filter the following events using the Tags menu: Making a page a redirect, Changing redirect target, Changing an existing redirect into a non-redirect, Blanking of the page, Removing more than 90% of a page content, Rolling back an edit. [20]
  • Some design improvements have been done to Related Changes page to integrate the new filters. [21]
  • "Save current filter settings" menu and legend overlapped the results. This is now fixed. [22]

  • Now Content Translation prevents source and target language to be set to same language. [24]
  • The dialog for selecting article to translate is standardized. It introduces a new component that is used for the selected page on both the "New translation" dialog and the "Suggested pages" list. [25]
  • More space is given to the language filter, to increase responsiveness and show more language names without truncation. [26]
  • While searching for a new page to translate, duplicates are not shown anymore for user search input. [27]
  • Various PHP warnings and JavaScript errors have been fixed. [28][29]

Call for Wikimania 2018 Scholarships

Hi all,

We wanted to inform you that scholarship applications for Wikimania 2018 which is being held in Cape Town, South Africa on July 18–22, 2018 are now being accepted. Applications are open until Monday, 22 January 2018 23:59 UTC.

Applicants will be able to apply for a partial or full scholarship. A full scholarship will cover the cost of an individual's round-trip travel, shared accommodation, and conference registration fees as arranged by the Wikimedia Foundation. A partial scholarship will cover conference registration fees and shared accommodation. Applicants will be rated using a pre-determined selection process and selection criteria established by the Scholarship Committee and the Wikimedia Foundation, who will determine which applications are successful. User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.
