G.R.霍廷
杰拉德·R·霍廷(英语:Gerald R. Hawting,1944-)是一位英国历史学者,主攻伊斯兰学。
生平
1978年,霍廷取得博士学位,伯纳德·刘易斯与约翰·万斯布鲁是霍廷的导师。他曾任伦敦大学亚非学院近东、中东历史教师,现已荣休[1]。
研究
他的研究继承导师约翰·万斯布鲁的路线,专注于研究伊斯兰教诞生的宗教背景。他详细研究了记载前伊斯兰时期阿拉伯半岛宗教情况的史料。他认为,伊斯兰教并不像8-9世纪伊斯兰著作中描写的那样,是从多神教的环境中发展起来的,而是在各种一神教相互斗争的基础上发展起来的。
霍廷的另一个研究领域是在伊斯兰教的发展过程中起了重要作用的倭马亚王朝[2],另外他还有研究伊巴德派的著作[3][4][5]。他学术上属于伊斯兰研究的怀疑派。
