約翰·維拉德·米爾諾（英語：John Willard Milnor，1931年2月20日—），美國數學家。他的主要貢獻在於微分拓撲、K-理論和動力系統及其著作。他曾獲得1962年度菲爾茲獎、1989年度沃爾夫獎及2011年度阿貝爾獎。

生平

米爾諾出生於美國新澤西州奧蘭治。在普林斯頓大學就讀本科期間，他就在1949年和1950年參加了普特南數學競賽，並意外地只用幾天的時間證明出了法利-米爾諾定理。

之後，他在進入普林斯頓大學的研究生院，並完成了論文《Isotopy of Links》。獲得博士學位後，他繼續在普林斯頓工作。

1962年，米爾諾因他在微分拓撲領域的工作獲得菲爾茲獎。之後，他又獲得了美國國家科學獎章（1967年）、Leroy P Steele Prize（1982年，2004年，2011年）、沃爾夫獎（1989年）。他還著有許多出色的書籍。這些書通俗，簡潔而又嚴謹。

2011年，他因其「在拓撲，幾何和代數的開拓性發現（pioneering discoveries in topology, geometry and algebra）」獲得了阿貝爾獎。作為回應，他告訴《新科學家》，「這感覺非常好（It feels very good）」，並說「早上6點的電話總是讓人感到意外（One is always surprised by a call at 6 o'clock in the morning）」。

• 1949年，18歲的米爾諾意外解決了波蘭數學家卡羅爾·博爾蘇克提出的一個有關根據曲率判斷扭結可解性的猜想。他並將其寫成論文《論扭結的全曲率》（On the Total Curvature of Knots）投給名刊《數學年刊》，次年獲得發表。當時老師阿爾伯特·塔克爾（Albert Tucker）在微分幾何課堂上將這個猜想告訴他們後才不過幾天，初出茅廬的米爾諾就給出了自己的解答。匈牙利數學家伊斯特凡·法利差不多同時發現了類似的解法。這就是後來的法利-米爾諾定理。
