有一句谚语叫“不要报纸上写什么你就信什么[译注 1]”——其实,这句话对于那些知名的报纸同样适用。不仅如此,这篇论述还指出了维基百科在核对媒体的报道时所遇到的危险——即编者倾向于把多个来源交叉验证的内容认为是被可靠来源所支撑,但实际上并不是。这点尤其适用于那些突发的重大新闻名流的花边新闻和报道。新闻报纸,甚至即便是那些高质量的新闻英语quality press来源也是互相摘抄彼此的内容,懒惰的记者们在重复报道时,只会注明“据称”,而不去核实其真实性。有时候,一个匿名信源给一个容易受骗的记者提供了一句话,官方的“不予置评”政策被愚蠢地认为是一种承认,媒体不进行进一步地事實查核便将报道匆忙发出。再然后,这个报道被其他媒体重复多遍,甚至被美化,最后才会有人去核实。在本文中,如果有哪怕一个对米德尔顿稍有了解的人被邀请发表评论,这只狗并不存在的事实就会很快被发现。所以,本文的重点是什么?记者们就他们一无所知的主题写报道——但我们却把他们当作权威的消息来源。我们要留心这一点。

奥托和它的姐妹埃拉是一窝八只小狗中的两只,他们俩由身为犬类育种者以及某种程度的狗的月嫂的克里斯蒂安·赫伯恩·斯科特所养大[1]。其他六只小狗的名字不得而知[1]

据英国皇家饲犬专家称,奥托是凯瑟琳的爱犬,而埃拉也成为了米德尔顿公爵家中的一员[2]

媒体报道指出,奥托最初是在2007年送给凯瑟琳的圣诞礼物[3]。《每日邮报》援引一位友人的说法,称同时期凯瑟琳给了她当时的男朋友劍橋公爵威廉王子一只黑色的拉布拉多小狗以代替威爾斯王妃戴安娜送他的已经衰老的猎犬威警(Widgeon)。凯瑟琳给威廉送出的礼物使威廉可以和她一起带着各自的狗散步[3]

2010年3月7日,《每日郵報》报道称奥托被送回了养狗场,因为它不小心吞了威廉王子送给凯瑟琳的一枚古老的珍珠耳环,这枚珍珠耳环是凯瑟琳28岁的生日礼物[4]。每日电讯报的皇室记者凯蒂·尼科尔评论称:

反驳

3月8日,《每日快報》的皇室通讯员理查德·帕尔默发推文称

同日,“小报观察”博客称克拉伦斯府已否认了奥托·米德尔顿这条狗的存在,以及相关的报道[10],尽管此前有媒体称克拉伦斯府的发言人拒绝就此事置评:

3月9日,《每日电讯报》修改了他们此前发出的新闻,修改后的内容声称奥托有“铁一般的不在场证明”。同日,克里斯蒂安·赫伯恩·斯科特告知《每日电讯报》奥托实际上在约克郡,而且斯科特也不是把奥托给了凯瑟琳,而是给了其弟英语James William Middleton的友人。饲养员还说埃拉才是实际送给凯瑟琳的那条狗,而且没有任何证据证明埃拉吃掉了耳环[1]哈博特尔和刘易斯法律公司英语Harbottle & Lewis的律师、米德尔顿家族的发言人杰勒德·蒂雷尔也否认了这篇报道的真实性,同时打趣称“我们为了找这条狗都快要急疯了”[译注 9][12]

每日郵報》随后将整则报道从他们的网页上撤下,并表示:

衛報》批评克拉伦斯府拒绝就最初的报道置评,称“克拉伦斯府本来可以很容易地把这个报道扼杀在萌芽里,引导媒体不发表这个报道。他们是不是宁死也不愿意在这类事上帮上一点小忙?”[译注 11][12]

然而,即便《每日电讯报》已经修改了最初的报道,其他报纸仍继续将《每日电讯报》最初时的报道当作事实性新闻。3月10日,安·威德康贝英语Ann Widdecombe在《每日快報》的新闻中指出威廉王子并没有因为失去礼物耳环而感到难受,因为他“觉得整个事件很搞笑”(found the whole episode hilarious)[13]

一年之后(2011年4月25日),网络上的媒体工作者仍把奥托和耳环的报道当作事实引用[14][15]。2011年5月12日,英国公共关系网站PR fire称在凯瑟琳·米德尔顿的婚礼前夕,“宠物专家认为她的黑色可卡犬奥托也会感到紧张,因为它挑起了女主人的窘迫回忆”[译注 12][16]

卢波(后续)

2012年2月发表在《每日电讯报》上的一篇报道称,剑桥公爵夫人最近收到了一只小可卡犬[17]。再后来的报道指出,这只小狗叫卢波(Lupo),是公爵夫人父母的狗埃拉的后代。文章还提到了早先的狗的报道,称“据说埃拉的一个兄弟奥托吃了属于公爵夫人的一对耳环,这对耳环是威廉王子在他们订婚前买的”——但没有声明这篇报道事实上是假新闻[18]

故事的寓意

随着对读者的竞争日益激烈,特别是在互联网对新闻媒体实时更新的要求之下,即便是所谓的优质“可靠”新闻来源也可能变得十分可疑。就如《纽约时报》在2013年12月的文章《如果一个故事如病毒般传播,那么其中的真相可能会受到打击》(If a Story Is Viral, Truth May Be Taking a Beating)中提到的一般:

换句话说,在今日的新闻报道如病毒般传播的情况下,新闻来源倾向于牺牲准确性以满足快速发布的需要。因此,他们相互引用,把相同的内容传来传去,希望你在他们的网站上先看到这篇报道。一段内容可能能从“多个可靠来源”得到验证,但不一定意味着它是准确的。
